Special Guest Artists

Dr-Chia-Chien-Goh-500x500.jpg

Special Guest Violininst: Dr. Chia-Chien Goh

The Wisconsin Intergenerational Orchestra is delighted to welcome "home" our guest artist, Dr. Chia-Chien Goh. Chien is the son of violin teacher and WIO Founder Seiw-Eng Goh and Peng-Beng Goh. Growing up in Brookfield, Chien and his sister Chern-Sing inspired students in a developing high school orchestra program under the direction of WIO Founder Anne Marie Peterson. Chien went on to earn a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and was in high demand as a soloist, conductor, and pedagogue.

Dr. Goh returned to Malaysia to create a holistic institution for musical training - combining elite instruction, performance immersion, competition guidance, international mentorship, and professional career development as the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of the Hsia & Goh Music Studio.

Dr. Goh will take the podium and lead the WIO Strings in a heartfelt performance of Grieg’s elegiac “The Last Spring”.  Chien will return to the stage as our violin soloist performing the beautiful “Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso” of Saint-Saens accompanied by the WIO Symphony Orchestra.

Special Guest Visual Artist: Anthony Brewer

Anthony Brewer, known artistically as ‘Kashes,’ delves deep into the human psyche, with his work revolving around the interwoven themes of breathing, anxiety, and the fragile equilibrium they share. His creations aim to encapsulate the tension between survival’s most primal rhythm—breathing—and the volatile, often overwhelming nature of mental turbulence. In ‘Kashes’ work, the notion of ‘overwhelming controlled chaos’ becomes a central motif, where the juxtaposition of serenity and disorder mirror the daily experience. Through abstract representations and layered compositions, Brewer challenges the viewer to confront the liminal space between calm and chaos, pushing them to question the harmony we often take for granted in the midst of life’s unpredictable rhythms.

As WIO’s special guest, Anthony will be creating a work of art inspired directly by the music selection of our May concert, which will be on display alongside more of his work in the lobby of the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center.

John Steinke_Conductor 1_edited_edited.jpg

Special Guest Composer/Conductor: John Steinke

John H. Steinke is a musician and former music educator. He served as Principal trombonist with the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra for nearly 30 years (also serving as the Ballet Orchestra’s “cover” conductor) and held principal trombone chairs with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and the Waukesha Symphony. His experiences range from recording studios to symphonic venues and cover the gamut from Broadway shows to big band jazz and the circus.

From 1978 to 2009, Mr. Steinke was the Music Director of the Knightwind Ensemble. He established high musical standards for the band, providing talented musicians an opportunity to perform music of significance and quality. His selection of repertoire, although often favoring original wind compositions, included a variety of styles and genres. And while his programming was once referred to as “somewhat eclectic,” in point of fact, he maintains that he was merely trying to choose an interesting mix in his musical selections – without, he adds, “causing undue panic for the players or inadvertently frightening the audience.”

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Mr. Steinke earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in music performance and a Master of Music degree in conducting. His principal trombone teachers were Frank Crisafuli of the Chicago Symphony and George Powers of the Milwaukee Symphony, and his conducting mentor was Tom Dvorak. Additionally, he has pursued course work in music technology at the VanderCook College of Music in Chicago.

Mr. Steinke’s music affiliations include Phi Mu Alpha-Sinfonia, professional music fraternity; the International Trombone Association; the National Band Association; the College Band Director’s National Association; and the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles. Besides his involvement with music, Mr. Steinke appreciates good coffee, good theater, reading, gardening and landscaping, and an occasional glass of fine wine. Also an avid road cyclist, he won the Gold Medal in the 2010 Wisconsin Road Race Championships.
